Insects are the animal group children handle most and understand least. Everyone has picked up a beetle. Almost nobody can say what makes it an insect and a spider not.

This sheet is built so the answer is available on the page.

The non-insects are on the list on purpose

SPIDER, TICK, MITE, SCORPION, CENTIPEDE and MILLIPEDE all appear alongside the real insects. None of them are insects.

That is the activity. After the search, have students split the list into insects and everything else, then work out the rule they used.

The rule is six legs and three body parts. A spider has eight legs and two parts. A centipede has too many to count. Once a student has the rule they can apply it to anything they find outside, which is worth more than memorizing which is which.

Expect a fight about whether a LADYBUG is a beetle. It is. The name is the problem, not the animal.

The life cycle needs the big grid

LARVA, PUPA, COCOON, NYMPH and MOLT are short enough for any size. CHRYSALIS needs a 10x10 or larger and METAMORPHOSIS needs the 14x14.

Put them in order after the search: egg, larva, pupa, adult. Then ask where NYMPH goes, and it does not fit the sequence at all, because grasshoppers and crickets skip the pupa stage and hatch as small versions of the adult.

Cocoon and chrysalis are not the same

Almost every children’s book uses these interchangeably and they are different things.

A moth caterpillar spins a COCOON out of silk and wraps itself in it. A butterfly caterpillar spins nothing: it sheds its skin one last time and the CHRYSALIS underneath is its own body, hardened.

Both words are on the larger grids. It takes thirty seconds to say and it is the kind of correction students enjoy, because they get to know something the book got wrong.

The anatomy words

ANTENNA, THORAX, ABDOMEN and MANDIBLE can appear at any size. EXOSKELETON, at eleven letters, needs the 12x12 or 14x14.

EXOSKELETON is the one that pays off. The skeleton is on the outside, which is why an insect has to MOLT to grow, which is why you find empty cicada shells on tree trunks. Three words on the same sheet that explain each other.

Which size

The 8x8 and 10x10 for a general activity with younger children. The 12x12 or 14x14 for anything tied to a unit, since the anatomy and life cycle words are all long ones.

Common questions

Are spiders on the list?

Spider, tick, mite, scorpion, centipede and millipede are all there, and none of them are insects. Having them on the same sheet is deliberate, because sorting the insects out from the rest is the classification lesson.

Does it cover the life cycle?

The larger grids carry larva, pupa, cocoon, chrysalis, nymph, molt and metamorphosis, which is the full sequence. Those words are long, so they need the 12x12 or 14x14 to fit.

Ladybug and firefly are on the list. Are those really bugs?

Neither one, and both are beetles. English names for small animals were handed out long before anyone sorted the animals, so LADYBUG, FIREFLY and DRAGONFLY all carry names that describe the wrong thing. Children find this genuinely funny and it makes the real categories stick.

What is the difference between a cocoon and a chrysalis?

A moth spins a cocoon out of silk around itself. A butterfly does not spin anything: the chrysalis is its own hardened skin underneath. Both words are on the larger grids, which is a cheap way to get to a distinction almost every book gets wrong.
