How the sizes differ
Grid size changes more than the dimensions. It changes which directions words can hide, and that is what actually makes a puzzle harder.
The 8×8 and 10×10 place words in four directions: left to right, top to bottom, and the two diagonals. Nothing is written backward. For a child still learning that English reads left to right, reversed words are confusing rather than challenging.
The 12×12 and 14×14 open up all eight directions, including right-to-left and upward diagonals. Scanning for a word that could run in any direction is a genuinely different task, and it is where most of the difficulty jump lives.
Printing
Download the PDF and print at Actual size, or 100% scale. That is the one setting that matters: “Fit to page” shrinks the sheet and the cells stop being the size they were designed to be.
Everything prints cleanly in black and white. Choose the gray or lines answer key style and the whole set uses almost no color.
