The body is the science topic children are already carrying around, which makes the vocabulary unusually easy to attach to something.

Ask a six-year-old where their elbow is and they will show you. Ask where their liver is and they will guess, and being slightly wrong about it is the beginning of the lesson.

The grid size decides inside or outside

The 8x8 and 10x10 stay on the outside, because those are the short words: HAND, FOOT, KNEE, NOSE, EARS, EYES, TEETH, HAIR, SKIN, NECK, CHEST, TOE, HIP.

Every one of those is something a child can point to, which makes these sizes work well below second grade with no anatomy needed.

The 12x12 and 14x14 open up the inside: HEART, BRAIN, LUNGS, LIVER, KIDNEY, STOMACH, MUSCLE, ARTERY, TENDON, NERVE, TISSUE, BALANCE.

The split is convenient. The same topic serves a kindergarten free-time sheet and a fifth grade unit without any editing, and you choose which one by picking a number.

Point to it as you find it

The simplest possible upgrade to this sheet, and it costs nothing.

Every time a student finds a word, they touch that part of themselves. ELBOW, touch your elbow. RIBS, feel your ribs. TENDON, the one behind your ankle.

It converts a vocabulary exercise into something physical, and children remember TENDON far better after finding the one in their own heel than after reading the word.

For the organs they cannot touch, approximate. Everyone puts a hand where they think the liver is, and then you tell them, and half the room is surprised it is on the right side.

Sorting by system

For an older class, give the word list before the grid and have them group it:

SKIN will end up in more than one column, which is correct. It senses, and it also holds everything in and keeps things out. Words that refuse to fit one box are the useful ones.

Which size for a unit

The 14x14. The system vocabulary is the long part of the list, and smaller grids fill up with HAND, RIBS and SKIN before they get anywhere near ARTERY or TISSUE.

Common questions

Is this suitable for younger children?

The 8x8 and 10x10 stay outside the body: hand, foot, knee, nose, ears, teeth, hair. A kindergartner can do those without any anatomy. The organs and systems only appear once the grid is large enough to hold them.

Does it cover body systems or just parts?

Both, split by grid size. The 12x12 and 14x14 carry artery, vein, tendon, nerve, tissue and organ alongside the named parts, which is enough for a circulatory or skeletal unit.

Can students point to everything on the list?

No, and that split is worth using. HAND, KNEE and ELBOW they can touch. HEART, LIVER and KIDNEY they cannot. Have them sort the found words into what you can point to and what you have to take on faith, which turns a scanning exercise into the first idea of a body system.

Is there anything a parent might want to check first?

Nothing beyond basic anatomy. The list is all standard parts and systems taught in elementary science, with no reproductive vocabulary on any grid size.
